Biography

Angelique M. Davis, J.D., is a Professor of Political Science, Director of African and African American Studies, and Affiliated Faculty of Law and Women, Gender & Sexuality Studies at ħ¶¼×ÊÔ´Íø. Her research and publications concentrate on racial gaslighting, apologies and reparations, the socio-legal construction of race, the political representation of nonwhite Americans, and the reinvention of white supremacy over time. Her articles have appeared in the Journal of Black Studies, The Black Scholar, Berkeley La Raza Law Journal, and Studies in Law, Politics, and Society. She published a co-authored article with Rose Ernst, PhD, titled "Racial Gaslighting" in Politics, Groups, and Identities that won the 2019 Best Article Award from the Western Political Science Association. Since its publication, their research on racial gaslighting has been used worldwide, featured by numerous media outlets, cited extensively by other scholars, and presented in talks and workshops at universities, Fortune 500 companies, non-profits, judicial conferences, labor unions, and community groups.  She also published Sparking Academic Joy: Writing Retreats for Scholars (2019) with Rose Ernst. She served as a federal law clerk and subsequently practiced law until she joined the faculty at ħ¶¼×ÊÔ´Íø in 2005. In addition to her academic pursuits, Professor Davis served as a Commissioner on the ħ¶¼×ÊÔ´Íø Civil Service Commission from 2012-2022, owns Exhale Professional Development & Consulting, and is a coach and campus workshop facilitator for the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity (NCFDD).
